Nowadays, there are growing numbers of small hotels with unique settings in Indonesia. Having to live in Yogyakarta for the last 2 years, i’ve witnessed a few of them being opened in Yogyakarta. And i must say, some of them are pretty damn cool. So now, it’s my time to share to you my local knowledge on boutique hotels in Yogyakarta. I have ranked them based on the price, let’s start from the cheapest.
Pawon Cokelat Hotel from $22
Jalan Sosrowijayan No.102 Gang 1
M +62 822 2534 7824
Located in the city center made Pawon Cokelat Hotel one of traveler’s favorite choice. Yogyakarta Tugu Train Station and Malioboro street is only a few minutes walk away. The rooms are relatively small, but the 10 rooms are equipped with LED TV, Wi-Fi and Aircon. Pawon Cokelat Hotel is a good option if you’re in a tight budget looking for a city center hotel. There’s a small hiccup thou, travelers traveling with private cars can have a bit problem parking their car since Pawon Cokelat Hotel is located in a small alley in Sosrowijayan area, with access only for motorbikes. Lokal Indonesia Hotel & Restaurant from $35
Jalan Jembatan Merah No. 104C
P +62 274 524 334
First of all, the location of Lokal Indonesia is a bit far from Malioboro, Yogyakarta’s city center and main tourist district. But that’s the only downside they have. The 12 rooms with 3 different room size and design are well decorated. All of their furniture were locally made. And since at first, LOKAL was started as a restaurant, it is a good fact that delicious local (and international) food is only a stone’s throw away.

It’s not just a hotel, YATS Colony also host of many art related events since the day of their opening day in Yogyakarta last year (2016). When YATS Colony claimed themselves as a home of a hotel, a boutique, a bistro and a collaborative working space, it is indeed very true. Having to look at YATS Colony IG account, definitely makes you want to put this boutique hotel on your bucket list. They have 5 different types of contemporary rooms you can choose from. Each room has its own theme, featuring recycled furniture by local designers, locally handmade fabrics and also arts by Indonesia’s emerging artists. If you have extra budget, you might want to check out their 2-stories suite. Go stalk YATS Colony IG account to see what i’m talking about. Location wise; YATS Colony is not in the tourist district, but it is relatively close to Malioboro, the city center. Ps: if you hadn’t noticed, YATS is actually came from the word STAY, but reversed.

And just to be clear, a boutique hotel is a small hotel, with each room usually has a thematic design. It should not have more than 100 rooms, but have at least 10 rooms. If it less, then it’s called a B&B or a homestay or a hostel.
