3 Cool Things I Have Experienced in Lombok

Before this trip, the last time i was in Lombok it was 2 years ago. I wouldn’t say that this place has changed, but more likely that this place has grown. Anyways, here are the 3 cool things i have experienced in Lombok this year!

Food.
Not that i’m saying you shouldn’t eat local food (you should seriously try Ayam Taliwang and Sate Rembiga, in my opinion, those two are the ultimate Lombok’s most famous local delicacies). But this place is a must go if you have been traveling for a while and now craving some delicious international food. Check out “El Bazar” in Kuta area. You love a place where the owner put so much love into it? Then this is the place. You can seriously taste it in the food they serve. Check out their instagram account, you’ll be wishing you were there now. There’s one thing thou, the place can be quite hot when it’s super packed. But i think no one cares, because the food are thaaaat good.

Culture.
85% of 3 million people living in Lombok are Sasak tribe – the indigenous people of Lombok. Visiting Lombok island wouldn’t be complete if you haven’t at least seen how Sasak culture looks like. Their house, the traditional dances, the ceremonies and the beautiful traditional hand-woven cloth called Ikat and Songket. Get ready, they’re quite different to the culture you’ve seen in Bali. If you only have a short time in Lombok, you can try visiting one of the villages, Sade Village, about 20-30 minutes from the international airport.

Island Life.
In general, there are 3 main reasons why people visit Lombok; hike Mount Rinjani, Surf in Kuta Lombok, and enjoying island life in one of the gili islands. In this trip, we did a one day trip to Gili islands, the ones in the northwest of Lombok. We took a speed boat from Teluk Nara. Not long after that, we have arrived in Gili Trawangan aka Gili T, right in front of Villa Ombak Resort. Just before lunch time, we went around the other two gilis for snorkling; Gili Air and Gili Meno. Then we headed back to Villa Ombak to chill and have lunch. With a few hours spare, we had plenty time to explore the island. I must say, by the end of the day, this trip made me realized that it’s actually possible to have an enjoyable day trip from Lombok to Gili islands. But if you really have plenty of time, you definitely have to spend at least 3 nights in one of the gilis. What you need to know about the gilis; Gili Trawangan aka Gili T, the biggest island among those three, is the party island. So if you’re looking for some quiet and romantic time, this island is not for you. The other island might be for you, Gili Meno, known as the honeymoon island because this island is best for couples who need some quality time together. While Gili Air is like the one in between; not much party like Gili T, but still enough places to have fun and quietness when you need it.

A super huge note, those 3 cool experiences happened within two nights in Lombok. Imagine if we stay longer!

Cheers,
@iamMariza – who still amazed that she enjoyed the one day trip to Gili islands.
